Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is looking for qualified candidates to fill the following position.
Human Rights Officer (Focal Person)
Purpose of the Job:
Manage individual human rights complaints, plan, and implement monitoring of places where people are deprived of liberty, emergencies and other institutions, finalize reports and issue recommendations. Develop and implement advocacy and follow up strategy.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Receive human rights complaints and manage investigation of human rights complaints assigned to him/her;
- Contribute to the design and implementation of strategies aiming at enhanced promotion and protection of human rights of individuals and groups in his/her areas of operation;
- Contribute to decisions in consultation with Regional Directors/City Heads/Coordinators;
- Contribute to and/or draft various human rights reports, communications, briefing notes, statement or other products;
- Assist in conducting capacity-building activities on relevant human rights and in developing and implementing training programmes;
- Conduct monitoring of places where people are deprived of liberty and other selected institutions to assess whether their policies and procedures are in compliance with international and regional human rights
- standards and produce reports with concrete remedial recommendations;
- Conduct human rights monitoring during emergencies;
- Issue recommendations: develop and implement advocacy and follow up strategy;
- Proposes areas for systemic investigation and refer them to thematic functions in consultation with the Regional Directors/City Heads/Coordinator;
- Conduct quality control, follow up on recommendations forwarded by relevant international and regional human rights bodies, by EHRC, and deliver statistics and trend reports as required;
- Collaborate with team members and establish and maintain contacts with technical staff of government and non-governmental institutions, civil society organizations,
- agencies, private sector, development partners and other partners that work on human rights in his/her area of operation;
- Conducts research on human rights issues as appropriate;
- Provide input on revisions of systems, policies, guidelines, manuals, and tools, and
- Perform additional tasks as assigned.
LOCATION Bule Hora, Dessie, Dire Dawa, Jinka, and Nekemte
REPORT TO Regional Directors/City Heads
DURATION Part-time
SALARY RANGE Gross monthly salary of ETB 22,989.00 – ETB 27,380.00 plus ETB 7,200.00 Housing allowance and ETB 2,200.00 Transport allowance, depending on candidates

About You
Qualifications and Experience
- MA/BA Degree Law, LLM, Human Rights Law, International Law.
- 4 years of relevant experience for BA and 2 years of relevant experience for MA.
- Computer literate
- Knowledge of Amharic is required. Knowledge of other local languages is advantageous.
