IT Officer

 

The Ethiopian Academy of Sciences (EAS) is a not-for-profit and non-governmental organization established to promote a culture of scientific inquiry and creativity and the pursuit of excellence and scholarship in the sciences among Ethiopians. EAS, which was established in 2010 and got recognition by the Act of Parliament in 2013 (Proclamation No.783/2013), is mandated to provide, inter alia, evidence-based policy advice to the government and other stakeholders. Its major activities include undertaking consensus studies, conducting convening activities such as public lectures, conferences, workshops, and symposia on issues of national priority, and promoting science, technology, and innovation.

As an institution dedicated to promoting science and technology, EAS has taken the initiative to establish the first science center in Ethiopia, which will serve as a hub to promote a culture of science and enhance public understanding of science and technology in the country. Ideally, a science center is a vast undertaking where interactive exhibits spanning various disciplines are displayed using current technological advances. The center has been established with a mission to: be a space where learning science is an enjoyable and engaging experience; inform the public on the principles and applications of science and technology; promote and foster interest in scientific curiosity and inquiry; cultivate creativity and innovation; and promote a flourishing culture of scientific enterprise. With this, EAS would like to welcome suitable candidates to apply for the position of IT Officer.

 

JOB SUMMARY

 

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the IT Officer participates in the development, maintenance, and upgrading of EAS IT facilities and systems, develops systems for interactive databases, administers the website, organizes and/or facilitates online training, webinars, and other meetings, participates in the activities of the Science Center. He initiates and implements IT-related programs/projects to meet the Academy objectives.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Plan, organize, and manage the overall operations of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) strategies within the Academy in line with the EAS strategic plan.
  • Act in alignment with the ICT needs of the Academy and system functionality to contribute to the realization of the Academy’s mission and objectives.
  • Plan, oversee, and manage the purchase, integration, and maintenance of computer and communication systems of the Academy.
  • Audit ICT systems and assess their outcomes.
  • Design, develop, implement, and coordinate systems, policies, and procedures related to ICT.
  • Ensure the security of data, network access, and backup systems.
  • Install, configure, and maintain software and hardware systems.
  • Redesign, develop, administer, and update the website of the Academy.
  • Design and manage information and IT systems, network, and databases.
  • Monitor and maintain the security of data, network access, and backup systems.
  • Organizing online video conferences and smaller meetings.
  • Provide IT-related technical support for EAS Units.
  • Troubleshoot systems and hardware bottlenecks.
  • Design, coordinate, and conduct online and/or face-to-face training of STEM students on basic and special computer skills such as:
  • Computer Programming on C, C++, Java, etc.
  • Computer Networking and Internet
  • Operating system
  • Database system
  • Computer graphics
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Programming embedded systems like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc.
  • Prepare manuals of IT Lab sessions for STEM students.
  • Support and Monitor STEM students in developing project prototypes.
  • Provide training to STEM teachers on IT-related subjects to enhance their skills, and other training sessions as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Deputy Executive Director.

 

TECHNICAL SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

 

  • Excellent proficiency in written and spoken English and Amharic.
  • Computer skills, word processing, spreadsheets, and Adobe.
  • High standard of usage of organization and professional different social media platforms.
  • Excellent Interpersonal skills.

About You

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education

 

  • MSc/BSc in Computer Science/Computer Science mainstreams, Computer Engineering, Microelectronics, Software Engineering or other related Fields from a well-recognized University.

 

Experience

 

  • A minimum of three years for an MSc and six years for a BSc as an IT officer, system administrator, Programmer, or relevant positions.

 

Preferable 

 

  • The applicant is preferable if he/she is conversant with programming in C & C++, Python, and Java; Computer Networking; Database system administration;
  • Artificial Intelligence; Computer system troubleshooting or other relevant skills.

 

Certification

 

  • Computer science mainstreams like Networking, Database system Design, and/or other relevant streams are a plus.

BGHWS Creative Art Center Assistant

 

JOB SUMMARY  BGHWS Creative Art Center Assistant

 

Under the guidance and supervision of the Director of the Blaten Geta Hiruy Woldeselassie (BGHWS) Creative Art Center, the BGHWS Creative Art Center Assistant will be responsible for the day-to-day activities of the center. The employee will execute the activities of the units of the center: Painting and Sculpture Unit; Literature Unit; Cinema and Photography Unit; Theater Unit; and Music and Dance Unit in all aspects of the commissioning, planning, producing, and distributing of different events.

The detailed breakdown of responsibilities is listed below.

 

OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT

 

  • Assist in developing and drafting policies, strategies, and guidelines for the center that are in line with the Academy’s vision and mission;
  • Assist in planning and implementing strategic and creative directions to meet the center’s objectives;
  • Devise themes, topics, and artistic works the center will showcase, discuss, and/or review in its weekly, monthly, biannual, and annual public events;
  • Ensure that the chosen themes and topics of the center are inclusive of the disciplines of art and as much as possible representative of the demographic, cultural, and artistic diversity of Ethiopia;
  • Ensure that the artistic accomplishments of women and other underprivileged and marginalized groups in Ethiopia are spotlighted, reviewed, and encouraged in the center;
  • Solicit sponsorships and initiate income-generating activities;
  • Execute the activities of the center within the agreed budget;
  • Prepares periodic reports and submits them to the BGHWS CAC Director; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the BGHWS CAC Director.

 

COMMUNICATION AND PARTNER ENGAGEMENT

 

  • Under the direction of the BGHWS Creative Arts Center Director, promotes participatory approaches to knowledge exchange and information management locally, regionally, and internationally so as to raise awareness about the center’s activities;
  • Creates new and innovative ways of promoting the public image of the center among the public;
  • Develops and maintain active local, regional, and international networks to promote public and stakeholder engagement in art through collaboration with kindred institutions and funders;
  • Under the direction of the director, collaborates with the Academy’s communication department to design an internal (within staff) and external (with the public and stakeholders) communication plan for the center;
  • Develops promotional strategies that will strengthen the visibility of the center;
  • Prepares a draft of the print and online publications of the center; and
  • Produces quarterly, bi-annual, and annual performance reports for the Director of the Center.

 

 REPORTING AND COORDINATION

 

  • The BGHWS CAC Assistant officer will report to the BGHWS CAC Director and work closely and in coordination with the Fine Arts Working Group of the Academy via the director of the center.

Science Center Director

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Science Center Director is in charge of the overall coordination, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the science center’s activities, reporting to the Deputy Executive Director. S/he follows up on activities such as house shows, exhibits, creating public awareness in scientific enquiry, discovery awards, fundraising and preparation.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

Job Responsibility #1: Planning and Implementing Core Activities

 

  • Planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the center’s activities;
  • Developing policies, strategies, and guidelines for generating resources for the center via entrance fees, event fees, membership fees, souvenir shops, science cafés, etc.
  • Preparing short-, medium -, and long-term activity plans and budgets for the centers;
  • Promoting and fostering interest in scientific curiosity and inquiry;
  • Coordinating educational programs and public outreach campaigns to promote science center visits
  • Organizing visits to the science center by various communities, groups, and individuals;
  • Promoting the visibility of the science center exhibits by organizing media coverage, online displays, and other means.
  • Cultivating creativity and innovation;
  • Ensuring that the center’s equipment and exhibits are in good condition;
  • Organizing periodic public events like science fairs, science competitions, and science lectures;
  • Working with educators in developing ideas that they can use in the center;
  • Facilitating proposal development and grant application; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Deputy Executive Director.

 

Job Responsibility #2: Staff Management

 

  • Manages, supervises, leads, guides, and supports staff reporting to her or him;
  • Ensures the development of management skills in staff directly reporting to her or him to increase their capacity to develop and undertake major initiatives and assume larger responsibilities to further expand the impact and sustainability of the center;
  • Supports the development of high-performing teams at the center and ensures that appropriate procedures and policies are followed; and
  • Completes performance planning, monitoring, and annual performance appraisals of staff directly reporting to her or him.

 

Job Responsibility #3: Networking, Learning, and Reporting

 

  • Establishes and maintains formal and informal communication mechanisms with governmental and non-governmental organizations;
  • Reinforces an organized approach to work;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

 

EDUCATION/TRAINING

 

  • PhD or MSc/MA in Science, Technology, Health, Agriculture, Social Sciences, or a related field.

 

EXPERIENCE 

 

  • 6–8 years of relevant work experience, out of which 2 years in a Senior Managerial Position

 

 TECHNICAL AND OTHER SKILLS 

 

  • Ability to provide leadership, communicate effectively, and promote a team approach to enhance staff commitment to successfully implement the science center strategic plan;
  • Demonstrated technical and managerial ability, sound judgment, and the ability to interact and work effectively with others at all levels;
