We are seeking to appoint a full time accountant, with a good level of experience in handling finance, accounting and auditing. The role is to support projects finance management, requesting, reporting, reconciling and dealing with issues of finance in HHR. Hararghe Health Research (HHR) is a collaboration between Haramaya University, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in UK, CHAMPS being the main project.
The projects operate in Harar, and surrounding communities and with a prospect of expanding to other places. The post-holder will be responsible for working closely with partners in handling finance, follow project milestones, adhere to policies and regulations of funders, report summaries. The person will also work with University cashers in disbursing pity cashes and purchases. The post-holler will closely work with the university finance and accounting department.
Haramaya University, Oromia, Ethiopia
Haramaya University is one of the oldest Universities in Ethiopia, with its first intake in 1954. It is about 17km from the city of Harar, 40km from Dire Dawa (where there is a regional airport), and 510km East of Addis Ababa. The College of Health and Medical Sciences is based on a campus in Harar town to facilitate training of students in nearby hospitals.
Hararghe Health Research (HHR)
HHR (https://www.hararghe.org/) is a collaborative effort between Haramaya University and LSHTM to advance maternal and child health care, capacity building and experience sharing between the two institutions in support knowledge generation and translation for maternal and child health policy and practice in averting preventable health conditions.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
The post-holder will be responsible for ensuring all aspects of a finance and accounting, such budgeting, payments, reconciliation, reporting, forecasts and to closely work with team here in Harar, LSHTM and other places as necessary. The person will create and use finance management platform, processes and systems to support technical and operational process.
Key Responsibilities
- Work on projects’ budget to align with rules and requirements
- Monitor financial performance overall and project by project
- Alerts PIs/leaders on potential deviations in performance
- Reports on monthly, quarterly, annual and project endline financial performances
- Advise teams and PIs/Leaders in good time in the course of project milestones
- Work closely with partners and parterres financial offices in supplying necessary information and reports
- Make sure expenses are in line with agreements made and are proper.
- Work closely with the university finance and accounting department.
- To keep accurate database of finance and produce evidence at any time requested
- Review payment requests for accuracy, completeness, compliance, level of authorization and clarity on the invoices.
- Review disbursement requests for accuracy, documentation and validity; effect payment to the right vendor from the right project.
- Review accounts on regular basis to ensure the balances are complete and accurate;
- Assure accuracy of supporting documentation for accounting records;
- Engage in monthly monitoring of salaries and arranges timely payment of salaries.
- Follow-up and control payable and receivable accounts.
- Receives original transaction documents, checks completeness and correctness and passes them to immediate supervisor.
- Participates in the preparation of drafts financial statements.
- Assists the project manager in the Implementation of the internal control system and financial procedures manual of the organization.

Essential requirements
- Master of Arts in Accounting and finance
- One years of relevant work experience
- Very good level command of written and spoken English language
- Ease of using computers with mastery on application soft wares such as MS Word, MS Windows, and MS Excel.
- Ability to compose professional communication
