JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Population Council is seeking a professional to serve as a Junior Accountant in its Addis Ababa, Ethiopia office. The Junior Accountant works in financial operations for the office. The incumbent will report directly to the Senior Accountant. She will collaborate with finance office at Population Council Head Quarters office in New York as well as at Population Council’s Ethiopia office.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Posting different entries into the NetSuite ERP accounting system.
- Work with supervisor on monitoring the cash liquidity position of the organization and to estimate the cash requirement for the project(s).
- Prepare checks and assist in monthly payroll and payroll entries preparation.
- Work on bank reconciliations on matching banks data and reconciliation of accounts.
- Prepare petty cash reconciliations and replenishment.
- Prepare monthly government tax dues and ensure timely settlement.
- Assist in cost effective and transparent procurement of goods and services; ensuring the security of capital assets and equipment funded by the project and in adherence with PC and donor polices.
- Process all project related payments including completing check payment vouchers and outbound checks.
- Ensure proper supporting document of payments and prompt filing of documents related to payments.
- Ensure that all Check payment vouchers, and any other relevant documents are completely signed and authorized.
- Review travel expenses reports submitted by staff to ensure accurate reimbursement / remittance.
- Carry out banking operations including requests for bank drafts and other banking transactions.
- Participate in preparing for annual statutory and project related audit.
- Make sure each vendor has all the necessary information to be recorded in NetSuite.
- Assist in disbursing payments to program staff and temporary workers in the field.
- Respond in a timely manner to queries sent by the New York Office on all financial matters including questions or corrections on the expense report and PPB with collaboration of the Senior accountant.
- Make sure all staff have entered their weekly time in a timely manner and assist who needs support.
- Update assets register of project related assets in a timely manner.
- Carry out other activities assigned by supervisor.

- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Business Administration or Management and a minimum of 2 years’ experience.
- Professional experience working in the NGO sector or public health related international organization.
- Experience working with international organizations, including communications with overseas HQ.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively with national and international colleagues.
- Ability to prioritize and organize tasks.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-cultural environment.
- Knowledge of accounting software, MS Office applications and web-based communications.
- Proficiency in written and oral English is required.
